Club Champs races for 2025

Age-adjusted Club Championships

This championship aims to reward effort rather than outright speed.  Actual race times are adjusted for age, so that older runners get their times reduced to what it is calculated they would have achieved in their prime.  The adjustments are made using an online age-graded results calculator.  The effects don’t do in until around 35, so if you are younger than this, your times won’t change.  The age-adjusted times are used to put runners in a revised race order.  Points are then assigned according to race position (1 point for first, 2 for second, and so on) separately for men and women.

Normally the championship is based around 12 local races, roughly one each month. In addition members can also submit their best 5K race and/or marathon times for the year. These will be age adjusted with the 5K race and marathon times each then scored in the same way as an individual race at the end of the year (using your age on the day of the race). This means there are a total of 14 chances to score points.

In a change from 2025 onwards 5k times will need to be from an official race, such as the Yeovilton series. Parkruns are not now included as they are very variable routes and not designed as races, indeed it goes against the very ethos of parkrun.

The ‘Club Champs season’ runs from the 1st of January for any Marathon or 5k results, with the first official Club Champs race being the internal Gold Hill 10k on the 19th of January, and finishes on the Sunday following the Stur 5 race, so in 2025 the 7th of December. That allows the final results to be processed and trophies engraved in time for our Annual Presentation evening at the club Christmas Party.

To qualify for an award, you must have participated in (and finished) at least 5 of the events (out of the 14 available opportunities to score described above).  The points from your best 5 race results are then added up, and the lower your overall total is, the better you have done.

There are separate bunny rabbit awards for the three best men and three best women.

Please submit your best 5K and marathon times as and when they happen to Ian via [email protected]  and/or message Ian Barnes so that they can be kept updated throughout the year.
